The Planning Commission was created to represent the concerns of diverse citizen groups and the broad interests of the community as a whole. It makes recommendations to the City Council on legislative land use decisions, including property rezoning and ordinance changes. It also grants final approval of most conditional use permits, site plan approvals, and subdivisions.

Some authority over minor conditional use permits has been delegated to an Administrative Hearing officer, a member of staff who is responsible for considering approval or denial of these types of applications following a public hearing. These hearings follow approximately the same format as Planning Commission hearings, and are open to the public to attend and make comment.

The commission provides balanced representation in terms of geographic, professional, neighborhood and community interest to develop a healthy, well-planned community. For more information about the Planning Commission, see Title 19.05 of the Cottonwood Heights Municipal Code.
