Big Cottonwood Canyon Trail & 3000 East - Pedestrian Safety Project

Project Start Date: July 13, 2026
Estimated Completion Date: Summer/Fall 2026

Beginning July 13, 2026, ACME Construction will reconstruct the existing Big Cottonwood Canyon Trail crossing at 3000 East. The project is designed to create a safer, more visible, and more accessible crossing for pedestrians and other trail users.

Planned improvements include new concrete curb extensions, or neckdowns, on both sides of 3000 East. These improvements will shorten the crossing distance, improve visibility between trail users and motorists, and reduce the amount of time pedestrians are exposed to traffic. The project will also include new ADA-compliant pedestrian crossing facilities, sidewalk improvements, upgraded street lighting, decorative crosswalk, and roadway and pavement-marking work.

During construction, pedestrians and trail users should follow all posted detour routes and construction signage. Motorists should expect temporary lane closures, reduced travel speeds, and occasional traffic congestion in the project area. Please use caution and follow the directions of construction personnel when traveling through the work zone.

Weekly Updates

August 27, 2026-  

The crosswalk enhancement project at Big Cottonwood Trail and 3000 East is approaching completion. The city will be placing a slurry seal on 3000 East, Monday and Tuesday of next week. Please be aware that overnight lane closures will be in effect on 3000 East, spanning from Big Cottonwood Canyon Road to Juliet Way. These temporary closures are necessary to ensure the work is completed efficiently and safely, and your patience during this time is greatly appreciated.

Monday, August 31: Southbound lanes closed from 9 PM to 5 AM.

Tuesday, September 1: Northbound lanes closed from 9 PM to 5 AM.

Drivers are urged to carefully observe all posted traffic control and detour signs while navigating through this area. As the pavement work wraps up, the City will implement new traffic lane configurations. To ensure everyone’s safety, motorists should remain alert and exercise extra caution as they adjust to the updated lane layout. We sincerely appreciate your patience and cooperation as this project approaches completion.

Ft Union Pavement Improvements

Following last year's mill and overlay of Ft Union Blvd from Wasatch to Griffiths Place, the city will be continuing with asphalt improvements from Griffith's Place through 3000 E. This will include a mill and overlay of the entire road surface in addition to some curb and gutter improvements within the project area. This will include the removal of the hooded gutters near Nutree Dr and improvements to the frontage in the area surrounding Memory Pole. The project will be completed by Whitaker Construction who is completing the Metro Cottonwood Connections project through the city and has partnered with the city to provide some improvements to the city beyond what was required for the original restoration.

Weekly Updates

July 27 – Ft Union will be closed for approximately two weeks while crews rebuild the intersection at Nutree and Ft Union to allow for better roadway drainage. Crews will be tearing out asphalt and identifying road base that needs replacing to ensure a good base for the road.

August 3 – Asphalt paving will begin on 4 August. The intersection is anticipated to be open by the end of the week.

Cardiff Road Reconstruction Project

Beginning Monday, June 8, 2026, Miller Paving Inc. will begin roadway and utility improvement work in the Cardiff Drive, Cardiff Circle, Twin Lake Circle, Solitude Drive, the Lake Mary Drive intersection, Oakview Circle, and Biscayne Drive areas.

Work will include concrete driveway approaches, curb and gutter, limited sidewalk replacement, raising and lowering manholes, storm drain upgrades, street light improvements, fire hydrant replacement, and roadway removal and replacement.

Miller Paving will coordinate with residents as work moves from area to area. Residents will be notified ahead of time when work is scheduled near their property.

When driveway approaches and/or curb and gutter are removed, driveway access will be unavailable during the concrete curing period. The curing period is approximately 7 days.

To help complete the work safely and efficiently, all vehicles must be removed from the work area between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM, unless alternate arrangements have been made with Miller Paving. Please plan accordingly to avoid disruptions.

 The project is scheduled to begin June 8, 2026, with tentative completion by September 7, 2026

Weekly Updates

August 17-

Work continues on the Cardiff Area Reconstruction Project.

Next week, crews will continue concrete improvements throughout the project area. Work will include pouring new concrete waterways on Cardiff Circle and Twin Lakes Circle and along Cardiff Road at the intersections with Biscayne Road and Brighton Way. Crews will also install new streetlight bases.

Residents should expect construction activity, temporary access impacts, and parking restrictions near active work areas. Please follow posted signs, use caution around workers and equipment, and avoid parking adjacent to ongoing construction.

Staker Way and Citywide Drainage Improvements

Project Start Date: June 29, 2026
Estimated Completion Date: August 2026

Beginning Monday June 29, 2026 Stapp construction will begin work to address several drainage issues citywide. The work includes rebuilding two waterways, one on 7040 S Deville Dr and one at the intersection of 2700 E and 7115 S. The main effort for this project will be installing a sump and drainage system on Staker Way to remove excess water that flows onto the street and cannot be easily removed due to the relatively flat nature of this street.

Weekly Updates

July 27 – Unanticipated utility conflicts have been identified. The city is working with SLPU to coordinate relocation of water lines before work can continue with installation of storm drain infrastructure.

 August 3 – Coordination with SLPU is ongoing. No major work is anticipated until coordination is completed

Greenfield Waterways Project

The city is working to repair waterways throughout the city. While we can't fix every waterway and gutter, there are some locations that need attention to maintain proper drainage. The city is working to address systematic problems in the Greenfield neighborhood. This includes replacing a waterway at Greenfield and Brookhill to increase flow, as well as replacing a waterway at Springbrook Way and Village Green Rd that has collapsed and is no longer functioning as intended. While crews were in the neighborhood, we also identified areas where gutters had been destroyed or had degraded to such a point that only dirt remained. 

 The Cottonwoods Connection

The Cottonwoods Connections project is a multiphase project that began this spring to connect water sources from Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon to be treated at either water treatment plant This project is not managed by the city but rather is managed by Metropolitan Water District. Work on this project has moved into Cottonwood Heights and may cause some delays while traveling through the city.
