Spring Runoff

Prepare for potential flooding this spring and summer with the following information from Cottonwood Heights and Salt Lake County Emergency Management.

YOUR SAFETY IS MOST IMPORTANT. 

  • Do not enter the creek or attempt to remove debris once the water levels rise
  • Watch young children and pets carefully when they are near water

Before runoff begins:

  • Check stormwater grates near your home and remove any debris.
  • If your property is near Big or Little Cottonwood Creek, monitor debris in the streambed or near stream banks and clear it to help mitigate flooding and property damage.
  • If you live along Deaf Smith Creek, monitor and clear debris.
  • Once debris is removed from the stream, pile it on the street in front of your home and call Public Works at 801-944-7002 to have it removed. The public works can only pick up stream debris, not other household items or yard waste.

Call Public Works at 801-944-7002 or report an issue to report a blocked storm drain grate or if debris is within local roadways or intersections.

If you see areas of overland flooding along rivers, creeks, streams, canals, or areas of channel erosion, call Salt Lake County Flood Control at 385-468-6600. Engage with City resources for local drainage problems before contacting Salt Lake County Flood Control.
