America 250: Celebrating Freedom and Community

The statements in this article are the author's views and not necessarily of the entire city council.

America’s 250th anniversary is a remarkable milestone. Most nations that old have endured countless revolutions, civil wars, and complete government overhauls. Yet America continues operating under the same Declaration of Independence signed in 1776 and a constitution ratified several years later.

What occurred during the American revolution was nothing short of miraculous. A collection of farmers, shopkeepers, and everyday colonists decided they had enough of being governed by a distant king. So they challenged the British Empire, the most powerful military force on the planet at that time.

It should have been a complete disaster. The colonists faced professional soldiers with superior weapons, more funding, and backing from the world's strongest navy. They persevered with determination, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief that people should govern themselves to eventually defeat a global superpower.

That 1776 victory still profoundly affects everyday life here in Cottonwood Heights. On any typical day, we have freedom to choose. We can start businesses, decide where to live, choose our children's schools or activities, or travel anywhere in the country without government surveillance or permission.

America’s 250 anniversary offers each of us something rare in today's climate: a reason to step back from the noise of current politics and remember what we share. Before the debates and the headlines, there is a foundation. A Declaration. A Constitution. A common story of people who believed that self-government was worth fighting for.

We have a wonderful opportunity to make this anniversary personal and neighborly. America's Potluck, planned for July 5, 2026, is an opportunity for neighbors to join one another for a shared meal, creating a sense of connection and belonging by fostering interactions among people from all walks of life.

Consider hosting one on your street or cul-de-sac. If a meal seems too much, simplify it by organizing a dessert potluck. Or invite neighbors to bring their favorite salsa and chips for Salsa Sunday. Find out how to host a gathering for America's Potluck at america250.utah.gov/americaspotluck

One potluck can turn into something more. My neighborhood has a long-established tradition on the 2nd and 4th Sunday evenings during summer months called, “Treats in the Street”. I’ve known other areas that promote Sunday evening neighborhood walk-abouts. Whatever it is, a simple neighborhood gathering establishes a sense of community. Casual conversations among neighbors help us see each other as fellow humans who care about the same things: our families, our community, our safety, and the opportunity to pursue well-being and happiness.

The city is sponsoring America 250 celebrations too. There will be “Dear America” and “Neighborhood Heroes” campaigns, an America 250 themed contest for the schools in the Fall, and an interactive America 250 art display. Watch this newsletter, our city’s website and social media channels, and the state’s website for celebration information, https://america250.utah.gov/

Through this year’s celebrations, let’s take the opportunity to find common ground, to remember our shared humanity, and to actively promote civility and kindness in our community.
