Post Date:03/18/2020

SALT LAKE COUNTY

An update from Salt Lake County regarding this morning's 5.7earthquake

We appreciate the efforts and significant response from our cities following the 5.7 earthquake this morning.

The earthquake happened at 7:09 this morning with the epicenter in Magna.  So far, we have had 26 aftershocks.  None of the aftershocks have been to the same magnitude of the initial quake.

We have been hearing a few rumors that the University of Utah is predicting a larger earthquake in the next few days.

This rumor is not true.

There is a 5% chance that we could get a larger earthquake.  Attached is a link to the USGS forecast https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/uu60363602/oaf/commentary .

We have not had any fatalities reported and only minor injuries. Emergency Management is asking the public to stay off the roads and shelter in place.

Salt Lake County Emergency Coordination Center (ECC) was already operational due to COVID-19 when the earthquake occurred.  Thank you for the preparedness of our community.  The transition to manage this incident has been smooth and seamless.  Salt Lake County continues to work on COVID-19 response as we have the immediate needs before us.

Salt Lake Airport has currently halted operations.  Many schools have been canceled with reports of school lunch being suspended.  Salt Lake County Government Center and non-essential facilities are closed. Salt Lake County has suspended court transport of inmates.  As of last report,  the West Jordan Court is still open. UTA has halted TRAX service to survey the system.  We have reports of 49,500 people being without power.  Dominion Energy is in contact with ECC. Residents should check their gas lines and report any leaks.

We are asking residents to stay calm, shelter in place, and report items of concern.  Emergency Crews have been busy and we encourage residents to dial 9-1-1 only in the case of emergency.
