Dean Kezerian has been a resident of Cottonwood Heights his whole life. From a young age, he has enjoyed nature and art. His interest in birds primarily comes from his grandfather, who taught him how to identify local birds. From there, Dean began drawing, painting, and eventually carving birds out of wood and clay. “My biggest influence was my grandpa, a talented artist himself, who carved and painted birds using wood. His bird sculptures sparked my imagination, and I wanted to create my own using the same techniques.” Having no formal art training, Dean has relied on family, artist friends, books and experience to continually teach him. Sculpting birds involve many skills such as woodworking, pyrography, metalworking, clay sculpting, drawing, and painting, in addition to design and composition. “I enjoy reconciling my vision for a sculpture with the reality of creating it in three dimensions. The bird, foliage and display need to come together in a cohesive and artistic way.” More than a hobby, Dean enjoys art as a way to preserve and share his experiences with nature. “If I can get people to see the beauty of birds around them, which often go unnoticed, I will consider myself successful.”
