Scott Bracken

Being a City Councilman is very rewarding work. I love being involved in the community.  My wife and I purchased our first home in Cottonwood Heights in 1994 and have been here ever since. My wife served on the Community Council prior to incorporation and we both worked on the Incorporation Committee.  I was elected to the inaugural Cottonwood Heights City Council in 2004, and re-elected in 2007.

My activities and duties on the City Council have included the following:

- Liaison to the Butlerville Days, Bark In the Park, Easter Egg Hunt, and other city activities committees. Our events tend to be very successful and I hope to continue this trend. It’s great to have a sense of community and these types of events really bring that home.We have great volunteers in the city, working with them makes this job a joy to do.

- I headed up the effort to locate a developer for the City’s website. You’re reading this, so you’ve found it. This website is very fluid and the city staff have the ability to make changes and updates as needed. This allows people to be informed on what’s going on in our city. It’s a great tool, and we’re always looking to improve it. If you haven't already, enter your e-mail at the top right of this (or any) page in the box to sign-up for notifications. You'll then be able to select what types of information you'd like to receive from the city. This is probably the best way to keep up to date many of the things going on around town. Of course, your e-mail is kept private and will not be given to any third party.

- I also aided in setting up public access to the Internet for public meetings.with a wireless Internet hot spot in the city offices for those attending meetings. If you would like access to the Wi-Fi hot spot during a meeting, just let someone on the staff know and they can give you the access password.

- I attended Fire School 101 and (while having a lot of fun) learned much more about how the fire department works, and (a little of) what it takes to do their job. I really enjoyed driving the fire truck (even if it was only around the parking lot), and using the Jaws of Life. I also had a ride-a-long one day with the C crew from Station 110.

- I've participated in ride-a-longs with the Police. It's very informative to see what types of things our police officers deal with on a daily basis.  Our new Police Department works very hard to be pro-active and community-oriented.  Their visibility is a great deterent to crime, and our DUI enforcement is gaining a reputation valley-wide.

- I worked with the property owners for a new sidewalk on Bengal Blvd to complete a safe walking route for kids traveling to Canyon View Elementary and Butler Middle Schools. New sidewalks on the west side of 2300 East near Brighton High school are also part of the safe walking routes. Public Safety is at the top of the list of our priorities and many thanks are due to all who made these projects successful.

- Also in the public safety realm, a traffic calming device has been placed on the intersection of Oak Creek Drive and Chalet. This was to address the very dangerous use of the "Brighton Bump". Other traffic calming activities include a redesign of the Oakledge/Demerest intersection and re-striping on 2325 E, Nantucket Drive, Parkridge Drive, and Banbury Road. If you have a traffic issue in your neighborhood, download a copy of the Traffic Calming Policy (Click on Public Works to the left) and see how you can get them addressed.

- I have worked with outstanding youth to form the Cottonwood Heights Youth City Council. You  see the YCC active throughout the city doing educational and service projects. This is a great opportunity for us to enhance the education of our youth, and for them to learn how a city is run, provide service to the community, and improve their leadership skills.

- Locating and hiring a professional city manager and staff has always been a top priority. These are the people the citizens work with on a daily basis. I think we’ve been very fortunate to get the employees we have. Each is very professional and willing to do the extra that good employees do to excel at their jobs.

I have been impressed with my fellow Council members. The citizens of Cottonwood Heights elected a very competent and hard-working group. The amount of time each has invested in making this city work has been awesome. While there will always be more work to do, the results are evident in the progress we've made so far.
