Planning & Zoning

The Community Development Department is responsible for land-use management, building and construction activities, engineering services, public works services, and  environmental quality in Cottonwood Heights. The Department maintains the General Plan, processes development applications and ensures that capital improvements, zoning and other activities of the City are consistent with the goals and policies of the Plan. The Department also provides staff support to the City Council, Planning Commission, and Board of Adjustments on decisions related to design, zoning and other development plans and projects. The major role of this department is to provide quality customer service to the residents and those doing business in the City and to provide the technical information and analysis needed for elected and appointed officials to make the most informed decisions possible.

The Community Development Department is also responsible for code enforcement.  Cottonwood Heights has a full time code enforcement officer who responds to zoning, noise, and other nuisance violations.   The Department also serves as the City's central permit agency and issues business licenses, building permits, and road excavation permits.

Cottonwood Heights contracts with Sunrise Engineering to provide Building permit and construction services.  As part of their contract they are responsible for the review of construction plans as well as inspections of projects and, when necessary, enforcement to ensure compliance with building codes.
